Commish's Recap

So this is it. The final two teams left standing in the 2010 DFL season.

A new king will be crowned this Saturday Night. Will it be Apple Creek or Perth?

Apple Creek
Revenge is sweet, but it holds greater satisfaction when served through vindication. In 2009 Apple Creek was eliminated from the playoffs by a strong TKO team who went on to face Mount Olive in the Championship game. Fast forward to week 2 of the 2010 season, Apple Creek was handed their second straight loss at the hands of a Mississauga team trying to piece together a roster. As we enter the biggest game of the season, they stand one step closer to revenge through vindication. With an impressive avenged loss against Mississauga in a crucial playoff game, Apple Creek looks to break the championship barrier that eluded TKO last year. With 3 straight losses to begin the season, they came through with 3 straight regular season wins to even the score and now stand with 2 big playoff wins under their belt. This last game looking to be the most important one of the season to complete the story.

Perth Panthers
The road here began easily for the Panthers wheeling off 4 straight convincing wins, unfortunately the high life of victory came with a hard hangover. Perth's final 2 games brought heartache in the loss column.
With their star quarterback away, the Perth Panthers need to dig deep and pull out a win; the same way they did against Philadelphia Rolling Thunder in their last playoff game. But something tells me that "The Well of Wins" may be dry for the Panthers as they now face their toughest test this season. Can Perth climb the mountain top without their fearless leader? Only the game will tell.

As the final two weeks of the regular season approach, there are clear divides in the teams. The top tier teams, middle of the pack and the bottom. Though little time remains, there can still be a lot of movement to help improve playoff seedings.

There are a few surprises this season and a few things that are following exactly according to my preseason predictions.

What a Surprise!

Apple Creek’s slow start and early struggles to find their stride at the start of the season has definitely thrown me off. What happened? Where is the dominance they showed off in 2009? Apparently a 1st place finish during the regular season isn’t going to happen. However, because they have such athleticism, they are bound to be a tough playoff team to beat in a “one and done” situation. Providing the perfect storm takes place (they win and everyone else loses their last few games), they can move up in the standings to avoid having to play for a 3rd round playoff spot.

TKO, What’s going on?!? They made great strides last year from a team of no expectations to the Cinderella team of 2009. Now they seem to wadding their way back down to a mediocre franchise. Their final two games are going to be real tough tests against a dominate Panthers team and a hungry and aggravated Apple Creek team. But they would definitely be big wins to boost their confidence and positioning in standings.

Ok, Ok, Ok, I hear the thunder loud and clear. Philadelphia Rolling Thunder are clearly taking teams by surprise and taking wins in the process. They’re young, they’re fast, they’re aggressive, and they’re on a role. Other then a slight miscalculation and underestimating TKO, they could have been riding along with Perth on the horse called “Perfection”. Philadelphia’s last two games are bigger then anyone realizes. Two wins could have them tied at the top (point differential permitting). A win against KG Unit has them potentially tied for 2nd and a win against Perth has them tied for 1st overall. Two games no one wants to miss.

Is team chemistry really over rated or is it paramount to a team’s success? Mississauga KG Unit doesn’t care. All they are doing is coming together and pulling out wins from anywhere they can find them. I’m almost ready to dub them the “Harry Houdini” of the DFL pulling off the greatest magic trick/illusion I’ve seen thus far. After a horrible performance in 2009, they did some patch work on the roster, swallowed a lot of pride and ego’s and took the field. They are looking to hold down the 2nd place spot against a young and aggressive Philadelphia team. Big game with big implications

According To Plan:

I know Titan’s are supposed to be big, but even in Greek mythology, the Titans fell. Toronto East Titans have a lot of talent on board. But personnel management and miscued plays are killing them. Hopefully they can get their quarter back situation worked out by giving the young QB prodigy a chance at the helm. It will be a big factor in Toronto East gaining strokes in the win column. Apple Creek will definitely have their talent in the right place; the Titans need to do the same to salvage a respectable record .500 record.

The Generals have the army but lack the discipline and knowledge. Though the season is all but lost, Scarborough can definitely learn from this season to become stronger in 2011. A definite improvement in the front office helped them organize better off the field. Now they can focus on getting better on the field next season. It may have been a rough road but it can only go up from here.

Perth Panther. 4 wins…zero losses…nuff said. What stands between the Panthers and a first place finish? A TKO team struggling to regain their 2009 form and identity. As well as an explosive Rolling Thunder group looking to take the DFL by storm. With the Perth’s fearless leader and QB star’s impending hiatus looming, they will have the challenge of keeping that high octane offence rolling. Are they up for the challenge? Only time will tell. But I can promise you, that last game of the regular season is one you don’t want to miss. Perfection or upset? Perth Panthers or Philadelphia Rolling Thunder? Who will be in top spot when it’s all said and done?
